Currently on my bedside table:
Moby Dick by Herman Melville
A classic that I have always wanted to read. Particularly interesting is the social politics on the ship (democracy, fate/religion, racial diversity/equality). Queequeg is also a hilarious character whose straight forward actions/thinking constantly surprises other characters’ sensibilities (feels like Dickens in that sense).
Twenty Years After by Alexandre Dumas
This is a less popular sequel to The Three Musketeers. I enjoy reading stories of adventure from different times and cultures. The exaggerated definition of the “French gentleman” gives an interesting take on a world of men ruled by their passions and a strict code of honour/conduct.
Silverlock by John Myers Myers
This is one of my all-time favourite novels. I re-read it about once a year. Its a story of a traveler who is thrown from a ship and ends up in the world of fictional literature. The protagonist embarks on a classic quest where he encounters literary celebrities ranging from Beowulf to the Mad Hatter. It is one of those books that has you stop mid-sentence to look up references to see if you really recognize the character that just gave cheeky directions to Dante’s Inferno.
