Festival News: Introducing the Youth Spoken Word Showcase

May 8, 2014

The Word On The Street is excited to announce the return of the popular This Is Not The Shakespeare Stage to the festival in 2014. This stage hosts great Canadian young adult books, authors, and artists, and features genre-based interactive programming sessions. New this year, we’re sharing the mic during the Youth Spoken Word Showcase!

Joined by the award winning BAM! Toronto Youth Poetry Slam team and The League of Canadian Poets, up to 8 teen poets ages 12 to 19 will be invited to perform an original spoken word poem at the festival. This is your chance to be a a featured performer at Canada’s biggest book and magazine festival!

Spoken word poetry can be used as an instrument through which you can explore and better understand your culture, society, and YOU. We encourage youth to use one of your most powerful tools, your voice, to share stories and create change.

Not sure what to write about? Here are some great links for instruction and inspiration!

Successful applicants will be invited to present their work to the public on stage on Festival Day – Sunday, September 21st, 2014.

The deadline for submissions is Friday, June 27, 2014. For more information, please read the Youth Spoken Word Showcase Information Package . Participants under the age of 18 must also submit a completed permission form.

Those interested in participating can send in their work to programming@thewordonthestreet.ca or by mail to The Word On The Street’s office at 67 Mowat Avenue, Suite 242, Toronto, ON M6K 3E3.

Good luck!
