The Word On The Street Toronto is looking for volunteers to help us bring our festival to life for its 30th anniversary!

 

There are many different ways to get involved – just scroll down to read about the different roles available both before and during the festival. If you are interested in a position, first make sure to read the description carefully for any specific requirements. Then, visit our Kindness Connect page. Kindness Connect is free and easy to use: just create a volunteer profile, select your desired shifts, and you’re good to go!

 

Exhibitor Relations Crew

Do you like to help people? Exhibitor Relations Crew members are responsible for the 250+ vendors in our Exhibitor Marketplace! Tasks may include hanging signs, monitoring traffic in and out of the site, and assisting with anything else vendors and sponsors might need.

There are pre-festival shifts.

There may be extended periods of standing/walking.

 

Floater Crew

Are you always up for an adventure? Floater Crew members could be assigned to any of the various crews here, or asked to help out with something completely different! They are expected to jump in wherever an extra pair of hands is needed, so no two shifts will look the exact same. Tasks may include acting as a runner, offering support at programming venues, filling in at info tents, providing relief breaks for other volunteers, and more. This is a great position if it is your first year volunteering with The Word On The Street, and you are not sure which crew is best for you.

This crew may require heavy lifting.

There may be extended periods of standing/walking.

 

Information Crew

Do you get excited about reading, writing, and all things WOTS? This is our second biggest crew, and an extremely important one. Tasks include answering questions from visitors, providing directions, selling official The Word On The Street merchandise, and handing out festival materials. They are the face of The Word On The Street to our 200,000+ visitors, helping to answer questions and provide excellent customer service. Be prepared to study up on our festival program to make sure you’re in the know!

There may be extended periods of standing/walking.

 

Logistics Crew

Are you interested in working in events? Logistics Crew members are responsible for helping to set up and tear down The Word On The Street, working closely with the Production Team at Harbourfront Centre to make sure that everything is in place for the festival to run smoothly. Tasks may include setting up programming areas, distributing materials to info booths, collecting signage, loading trucks, and more. This is an active and exciting role that will have you up on your feet and moving around.

There are pre-festival shifts.

This crew requires heavy lifting.

Survey Crew

Are you passionate about data and stories? Survey Crew members conduct essential market research by talking with attendees and collecting survey responses that help us understand what we’re doing well and the areas where we can improve.

There may be extended periods of standing/walking.

 

Social Media Crew

Are you savvy with Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram? Are you a lightning-fast live-tweeter? Do you Boomerang, bro? Social Media Crew members work with our Communications team to bring The Word On The Street’s festivities to our online audiences. Tasks may include live-tweeting panels, generating content for social media channels, and assisting the Communications team in capturing a variety of programming across the festival site.

There may be extended periods of standing/walking. 

These positions require an application due to the volume of interest. Please submit a resume and statement of interest to volunteers@thewordonthestreet.ca. Candidates may also be asked to complete a short test to demonstrate ability.

 

Photography Crew

Are you a shutterbug? Photography Crew members help us snap photos and capture exciting memories of the festival.

There may be extended periods of walking/standing/bending.

These positions require an application due to the volume of interest. Please submit a portfolio and statement of interest to volunteers@thewordonthestreet.ca. Candidates must supply all required equipment.

 

Programming Crew

Do you want to help our authors have a great festival? Programming Crew members work alongside the Assistant Production Coordinator at one of our 14 stages to ensure that all of our programming runs smoothly between segments! Tasks may include greeting authors, assisting with signing lines, conducting and audience surveys and counts, and distributing author thank you cards.

There may be extended periods of standing/walking.

 

VIP Lounge Crew

Are you interested in working with Very Important People? Join our VIP Lounge Crew to greet and meet the needs of our special guests. Tasks include welcoming guests to the space, monitoring who is coming in and out, offering assistance whenever necessary, and creating an exceptional customer service experience.

 

Volunteer Captains

Have you volunteered with The Word On The Street before, and would like to take on more of a leadership role? Then we would love to have you as a Captain! Captains are assigned to a crew, and serve as a go-to person for the volunteers working on that crew. This could look like everything from delegating tasks, performing check-ins, answering questions, and liaising with festival staff, to just leading by example with your positive attitude and festival expertise! 

These positions are for returning volunteers only.

Volunteer Office Crew

Do you like meeting new people? This essential behind-the-scenes role at the festival works out of our Harbourfront headquarters with the Volunteer Coordinator to ensure that all volunteers are present, accounted for, and prepared. Tasks may include greeting our 250+ volunteers, distributing supplies and resources, and supporting the Volunteer Coordinator with various administrative tasks.

There are pre-festival shifts.

 

Street Team

Are you ready to hit the streets? Street Team Crew members help spread the word about the festival by sharing information at key places and transit stations across Toronto before and during the festival. Tasks include distributing promotional materials, engaging folks in conversation about WOTS, and sharing their love of the festival with fellow bookworms and bookworms-to-be.
