Toronto Book Award finalists and past winners to appear at the The Word On The Street

TORONTO, August 28, 2014 —– The Word On The Street Toronto is happy to host the finalists for the 2014 Toronto Book Awards at this year’s festival on Sunday, September 21st. Be among the first to hear the finalists read from their nominated books at the Toronto Book Awards Tent. Each author will read twice from their work throughout festival day, beginning at 11 AM.

The finalists are:

• Anthony De Sa, for his novel, Kicking the Sky, published by Doubleday Canada
• Charlotte Gray for her historical non-fiction book, The Massey Murder: A Maid, Her Master and the Trial that Shocked a Country, published by HarperCollinsCanada Ltd. (a representative will read on Charlotte’s behalf)
• Carrianne K. Y. Leung for her novel, The Wondrous Woo, published by Inanna Publications
• Nick Saul and Andrea Curtis for their non-fiction book, The Stop: How the Fight for Good Food Transformed a Community and Inspired a Movement, published by Random House Canada
• Shyam Selvadurai for his novel, The Hungry Ghosts, published by Doubleday Canada

The Toronto Book Awards were established by Toronto City Council in 1974 to honour authors of books of literary or artistic merit that are evocative of Toronto. The winner will be announced on October 16, 2014, at the Toronto Reference Library’s Bram & Bluma Appel Salon.

Past Toronto Book Award-winning author David Bezmozgis will present his novel, The Betrayers, at 2:00 PM in a special spotlight segment commemorating The Word On The Street’s 25th anniversary and Bezmozgis’ involvement with the festival throughout the years.

The Toronto Book Awards Tent also features a program of readings from Diaspora Dialogues. Diaspora Dialogues supports the creation and presentation of new fiction, poetry, and drama that reflect the complexity of the city through the eyes of its richly diverse writers. Hear from past Toronto Book Awards winners and finalists Andrew J. Borkowski, Rabindrath Maharaj, Alissa York, and Elizabeth Ruth, beginning at 2:30 PM.
