Pub. news: Douglas Coupland, From Author to Fashion Guru

July 12, 2010

From the man who brought us Generation X, Jpod and, most recently, Generation A, comes a new endeavour that may just be his most fascinating yet: Roots X Douglas Coupland, his very own fashion line.

Does it get any better than this?

That’s just a taste.

His line has everything from clothing (pants, t-shirts, skirts, jackets) to accessories (tote bags, lap top holders, passport holders, snow boards, duffel bags, leather bracelets).   Each with their own individual design that ranges from his signature scrawled across it, to colour bars, to circuit boards.

Michael Budman, Roots co-founder said in a Toronto Star article that “Roots was acoustic. Doug has taken us electric.”

Have no fear though, the Roots Beaver is not leaving us anytime soon.  Instead Coupland has given it a 21st century facelift: It now glows in the dark.

Coupland said he wanted to update the Canadian identity to fit the 21st century, saying that Moose and Mounties just aren’t cutting it anymore for younger generations.  He certainly does bring a unique twist to Root’s traditional take of Canadian cultural landmarks.

I really like his pop art designs, I saw them at the Eaton Centre the other day!

What do you think?  Is Coupland this summer’s top fashion guru?
