So you’ve written a story. Or a poem. Or an essay. Now what?
You know you should send it somewhere, but where? There are great resources available like the CBC guide to Canadian literary magazines, but as a writer who most likely has a day job, it can be hard to keep track of which magazines are open when. There are so many!
That’s why we put together this quick list of ten Canadian literary magazines that are looking for submissions between August and October—so you can stop creating spreadsheets, and start sending things out! (That said, remember to always make sure that the magazine you’re submitting to is a fit for your work!)

Arc Poetry Magazine
Open: They reopen September 1, and stay open until May!
What they’re looking for: Inventive and evocative poetry from new and unique voices, especially Indigenous poets, women or female-identifying poets, and POC

Augur Magazine
Open: September 1-30
What they’re looking for: Dream-like realism, slipstream, and speculative fiction and poetry—especially from under-represented, diverse, and/or marginalized creators

Existere
Open: Open year-around, but submit by December 31st to be considered for their Spring/Summer issue
What they’re looking for: Poetry, short plays, short stories, postcard/flash fiction, art and literature reviews, critical essays, interviews, sketches, photos, etc

Looseleaf Magazine
Open: Until September 20 for their themed issue, “Labour”.
What they’re looking for: Poetry, visual art, comics, fiction, nonfiction, photography, short video/film, animation, and music/audio content produced by pan-Asian (they focus on South, Southeast, East, Mixed) creators

Montréal Writes
Open: July 27 – August 16 for their August Issue, August 27 – September 16 for their September Issue
What they’re looking for: Short stories (both fiction and non-fiction), poetry, artwork and photography

Room Magazine
Open: Aug 1 – Oct 31 for their Open Issue
What they’re looking for: Fiction, poetry, creative non-fiction, and visual art on any theme by women (cisgender and transgender), transgender men, Two-Spirit and nonbinary people

Open: Until September 1 for their Winter issue!
