He read from his new book <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stevenheighton.com\/EveryLostCountry.html\"><em>Every Lost Country<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/torontowots.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/12\/heighton_crmaryhuggard.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-283 alignright\" style=\"margin-left:8px;margin-right:8px\" title=\"Heighton_crMaryHuggard\" src=\"http:\/\/torontowots.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/12\/heighton_crmaryhuggard.jpg?w=271\" alt=\"\" width=\"190\" height=\"210\" \/><\/a>It was my first time at The Word On The Street Toronto and, as I wandered around\u00a0before and after my\u00a0event,\u00a0it struck me that the festival showcases Toronto at its\u00a0best:\u00a0warm clear\u00a0September weather,\u00a0multicultural crowds and music and street food,\u00a0the general celebration of the arts and,\u00a0specifically, of writers in\u00a0their\u00a0full diversity,\u00a0from spoken word poets to historical novelists.\u00a0\u00a0I&#8217;m a strong believer in hybrid vigour and\u00a0I could feel it there.\u00a0 The feeling energized me\u00a0while I read at the Great Books Marquee &#8212; and what\u00a0I liked\u00a0about reading in a tent, with its\u00a0negligible walls and open front, is that I didn&#8217;t feel\u00a0separated from\u00a0the\u00a0many other events taking place.\u00a0 Again, the collective energy of the fest, like the music drifting in from the bandstand,\u00a0seemed to permeate\u00a0each individual event.\u00a0\u00a0We were all\u00a0drawing on each other &#8212; writers, musicians,\u00a0audiences, the guys selling baked yams with butter and brown sugar.\u00a0I loved it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:right\">&#8211;Steven Heighton<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/p>\n<p><strong>About his book: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/torontowots.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/12\/every-lost-country.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-285\" style=\"margin-left:8px;margin-right:8px\" title=\"Every Lost Country\" src=\"http:\/\/torontowots.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/12\/every-lost-country.jpg?w=194\" alt=\"\" width=\"136\" height=\"210\" \/><\/a>A doctor and his daughter travel to Nepal to join a climbing expedition.
