{"id":3363,"date":"2010-06-24T10:59:28","date_gmt":"2010-06-24T10:59:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/torontowots.wordpress.com\/?p=22"},"modified":"2010-06-24T10:59:28","modified_gmt":"2010-06-24T10:59:28","slug":"trillium-book-award-author-readings-june-23","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thewordonthestreet.ca\/toronto\/trillium-book-award-author-readings-june-23\/","title":{"rendered":"Trillium Book Award Author Readings \u2013 June 23"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have found my summer reading list.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/torontowots.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/assetfactory.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-23\" style=\"border:0 none\" title=\"AssetFactory\" src=\"http:\/\/torontowots.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/assetfactory.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"125\" height=\"132\" \/><\/a>Last night was the 23<sup>rd<\/sup> Trillium Book Award author readings, and Toronto WOTS was lucky enough to\u00a0\u00a0 attend.\u00a0 It was a pretty full house that greeted the 17 nominees for both the French and English Book Award and Poetry Award, although not all nominees could attend.\u00a0 Sadly, we did miss out on seeing\/hearing Margaret Atwood and Alice Munro read from their nominated books <em>The Last Flood<\/em> and <em>Too Much Happiness.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Of course, I was star struck all evening.\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t believe Anne Michaels was standing in front of me, her book <em>The Winter Vault <\/em>is a nominee this year. \u00a0She has a great voice, very poetic and quite raspy and low.\u00a0 I felt like I should have been snapping my fingers, instead of clapping.<\/p>\n<p>One particular highlight of the evening was Pasha Malla\u2019s surprise appearance \u2013 he won last year\u2019s book award for his short story collection, <em>The Withdrawal Method<\/em>.\u00a0 He was given the honour of reading from Alice Munro\u2019s nominated short story collection, a daunting task according to Malla, \u201cyou have no idea\u201d he said. \u00a0When he walked on stage, he immediately apologized for not being Alice Munro.\u00a0 Apparently, he was speaking to someone whose sole reason for going to author readings was to hear the authors themselves read from their own work.\u00a0 Oops, he said.\u00a0 Despite the pressure he was under, he performed flawlessly.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t know he was so hilarious!\u00a0 He managed to mix his own humour with Alice Munro\u2019s work, making for a very entertaining reading.<\/p>\n<p>Alexandra Leggat also read a hilarious excerpt from her short story collection, <em>Animal<\/em> about her dashed chances for football greatness. \u00a0\u00a0And Ian Brown\u2019s reading from <em>The Boy in the Moon<\/em>, was touching.\u00a0 Definitely a book that is enhanced by an author reading, seeing as it is his personal story about his relationship with his son.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, the readings were a hit!\u00a0 Great set-up, great nominees, fabulous literature, plus the free, delicious food being served all night didn\u2019t hurt; mini burgers, chicken pot pie, fresh fruit, oh my!<\/p>\n<p>Trillium Book Awards: http:\/\/www.omdc.on.ca\/Page3217.aspx<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have found my summer reading list.
