Since it first opened in 1972, Bakka Phoenix Books<\/a> has changed locations and owners a few times, but now calls Harbord its home. The name \u201cBakka\u201d comes from the science fiction classic Dune <\/i>by Frank Herbert, which means \u201cthe weeper who mourns for all mankind.\u201d Bakka Phoenix is considered Canada\u2019s oldest science fiction and fantasy bookstore, and their passion for science fiction is obvious to anyone who has visited.<\/p>\n In fact, manager Chris Szego has been quoted<\/a> saying, \u201cscience fiction is not just a genre, it\u2019s a community. If you want to be a part of that community, then just head to one of the events that Bakka Phoenix often host. You can attend author appearances, readings and panels. They have hosted authors and stars like the cast of Star Wars and George R.R. Martin.<\/p>\n Even if all you\u2019re looking for is a new sci-fi read, you can count on their staff to help you out. Former Bakka Phoenix staffers have gone on to become prominent writers themselves, like Cory Doctorow and Robert J. Sawyer.
