Books Around Town is a series that explores some of the city\u2019s most popular places for book nerds to gather and share their love of reading.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Toronto Public Library has 100 branches throughout the city, but the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.torontopubliclibrary.ca\/torontoreferencelibrary\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Toronto Reference Library<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is the biggest\u2014and one of the biggest libraries in the entire city, even when you count university libraries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Reference Library first began operating in 1830 as the York Mechanics&#8217; Institute, but the library was only incorporated into the Toronto Public Library system in 1998. \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It\u2019s most well-known for the Marilyn &amp; Charles Baillie Special Collections Centre on the library\u2019s fifth floor. Other collections include the Arthur Conan Doyle Collection, the Baldwin Collection of Canadiana, picture collections that contain over a million images, and the theatre and performing arts collection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There are also exhibits you can visit in the TD Gallery. On now is an exhibit called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.torontopubliclibrary.ca\/programs-and-classes\/exhibits\/alter-ego.jsp\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Alter Ego: Comics and Canadian Identity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Until July 29, you can check out works by Canadian comics creators. On Tuesdays you can even go on guided tours! The Alter Ego exhibit was launched during the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www2.torontocomics.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Toronto Comic Arts Festival<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (TCAF), an event that takes place annually at the Reference Library.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you need a break from research or need a team meeting spot, you can stop in at <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.balzacs.com\/locations\/reference-library\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Balzac\u2019s Cafe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> downstairs for some coffee. Or you can check out some of the regular programming: The library hosts book clubs and writers\u2019 groups like the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.torontopubliclibrary.ca\/detail.jsp?Entt=RDMEVT19809&amp;R=EVT19809\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Non-Fiction Book Club<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.torontopubliclibrary.ca\/detail.jsp?Entt=RDMEVT19808&amp;R=EVT19808\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Historical Fiction Writers\u2019 Group<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you\u2019re a teen, there\u2019s a storytelling workshop series run by Indigenous spoken word artist Mahlikah Aweiri Enml\u2019ga\u2019t Saqama\u2019sgw called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.torontopubliclibrary.ca\/detail.jsp?Entt=RDMEVT23342&amp;R=EVT23342\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Stories Make Us Whole<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Or you could make your own books using the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.torontopubliclibrary.ca\/using-the-library\/computer-services\/book-printing-service\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Asquith Press<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> book printing service. You can print your own paperback for low prices and no minimum order!
