Maya is our wonderful new Programming Assistant and will be with us for a few months to help keep all the best parts of the festival running smoothly.<\/p>\n<p>We took some time to talk with her this week regarding the deepest and darkest questions in life like &#8220;In a second life, what type of edible crop would you be?&#8221; and &#8220;Do you judge a book by its cover?&#8221; FYI: these questions were asked during her\u00a0interview and clinched her getting the position.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>What part of reading brings you the most joy?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Losing myself completely to the world inside the book \u2014 if I have missed 3 stops on the TTC, or look up to find you five minutes into a conversation with me and I have heard nothing, I am not going to fret or apologize because I was busy having adventures elsewhere. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>What books are you reading now?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I just finished <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Spawning Grounds<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Gail Anderson-Dargatz, and am currently strolling through <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Braiding Sweetgrass<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Robin Wall Kimmerer. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Have you ever fallen in love with a character from a book?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No, but they have always been the best of friends. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>What does your reading space look like?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have just moved, so it\u2019s still formulating &#8211; but it\u2019s a Victorian love seat my mother gifted me, framed by my bookcases, and near a large window. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Do you judge a book by its cover (don&#8217;t worry, we won&#8217;t judge you)?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I do! I think the quality of the design of a cover says a LOT about the contents of the book.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>If you could chat with any writer, living or dead, whether they speak English or not, what would be your first question for them?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A chat with Rudyard Kipling about British colonialism in India would be fascinating. I\u2019m not sure what my first question would be, probably along the lines of wanting to know where his opinions on identity and citizenship fall. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>If you could commission a sequel to any book you wanted, which one would it be? And, if you\u2019re brave enough, what would you want it to be called?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Radiance<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Catherine M. Valente is a very niche sci-fi book that deserves a sibling. It has been described as a \u201cDECOPUNK PULP Sci-Fi ALT-HISTORY SPACE OPERA MYSTERY\u201d and involves multi-dimensional space whales, and many poetic monologues. The sequel would really be a prequel, and would be called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Descent. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>If you could come back in another life as an edible crop, what you want to be? And what dish would you want to be made into?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This one made me laugh out loud. I would want to be a squash\u00a0because it is so versatile \u2014 savoury and sweet \u2014 and I would want to be baked with chilis and dark maple syrup. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>The music stopped. She died. Explain.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The music box was a gift from a long-ago birthday. As a girl, the tinkle of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greensleeves <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">often soothed nightmares away\u00a0and comforted tears.
