Be among the first to hear the finalists read from their nominated books at the <strong>Toronto Book Awards Tent<\/strong>. Each attending author will read from their work throughout festival day, beginning at 11:00am.<\/p>\n<p>The finalists are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Howard Akler<\/strong>, for his essay, <em>Men of Action<\/em> published by Coach House Books<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ann Y.<\/strong><strong>K. Choi <\/strong>for her debut novel, <em>Kay\u2019s Lucky Coin Variety<\/em>, published by Simon &amp; Schuster<\/li>\n<li><strong>John Lorinc<\/strong>, <strong>Michael McClelland<\/strong>, <strong>Ellen Scheinberg<\/strong>, and <strong>Tatum Taylor <\/strong>for their work as editors of <em>The Ward<\/em>, concerning Toronto\u2019s first immigrant neighbourhood, published by Coach House Books<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cordelia Strube <\/strong>for her novel, <em>On the Shores of Darkness, There is Light<\/em>, published by ECW<\/li>\n<li><strong>Marnie Woodrow <\/strong>for her novel,\u00a0<em>Heyday<\/em>, published by Tightrope Books<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Toronto Book Awards were established by Toronto City Council in 1974 to honour authors of books of literary or artistic merit that are evocative of Toronto. The winner will be announced on <strong>October 11, 2016<\/strong>, at the Toronto Reference Library\u2019s Bram &amp; Bluma Appel Salon. This annual awards program is produced by the City of Toronto and the Toronto Public Library.<\/p>\n<p>The Toronto Book Awards Tent also features a program of readings from\u00a0<strong>Heritage Toronto <\/strong>and <strong>Diaspora Dialogues<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The Heritage Toronto Book Award celebrates outstanding work in the production of non-fiction books about Toronto\u2019s heritage and history. At The Word On The Street, you can learn how writing about the past can affect our understanding of the present at a panel moderated by\u00a0<strong>Bianca Spence<\/strong>, with authors and editors of four Heritage Toronto Award-nominated books:\u00a0<strong>Barbara Dickson<\/strong>\u00a0(<em>Bomb Girls<\/em>),\u00a0<strong>Joan Roberts<\/strong>\u00a0(<em>Cracked<\/em>), <strong>John Sewell<\/strong>, (<em>How We Changed Toronto<\/em>), and\u00a0<strong>Tatum Taylor<\/strong>\u00a0(<em>The Ward<\/em>). The panel kicks off at 12:30pm.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Diaspora Dialogues<\/strong> supports the creation and presentation of new fiction, poetry, and drama that reflect the complexity of the city through the eyes of its culturally diverse writers. At this year\u2019s\u00a0Diaspora Dialogues\u00a0panel, join five acclaimed writers at 3:00pm for Writing Toronto In The Future, hosted by\u00a0<strong>Aparita Bhandari<\/strong>\u00a0and featuring\u00a0<strong>Cherie Dimaline<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Judy Fong Bates<\/strong>, <strong>George Elliott Clarke<\/strong>,\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Guillermo Verdecchia<\/strong>.
