Seligman, one of the best-known editor of contemporary Canadian literature \u2013 indeed a force for\u00a0shaping\u00a0the\u00a0country\u2019s literary identity, began at\u00a0McClelland\u00a0&amp; Stewart in the role of\u00a0senior\u00a0editor in 1978, eventually becoming fiction publisher\u00a0by 2000 and publisher of M&amp;S in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>Among her many editorial achievements, she shepherded\u00a0books by Michael Ondaatje, Margaret Atwood, Andre Alexis,\u00a0Rohinton Mistry, David Bergen, Elizabeth Hay, and dozens more from manuscript to completed book. Seligman also worked as\u00a0former president of PEN Canada, established a poetry board\u00a0at M&amp;S, and was\u00a0a member of the Order of Ontario.<\/p>\n<p>As a festival concerned with the celebration and promotion of\u00a0Canadian\u00a0writing and literacy \u2013\u00a0and as a festival that has hosted many of the authors Seligman published \u2013\u00a0Seligman\u2019s passing is felt deeply by the organizers of The Word On The\u00a0Street.\u00a0Not only did this native New Yorker develop the voices of so many incredible Canadian authors, she also made untold efforts to foster an audience for Canadian writing.
