Heather loves being outdoors\u00a0all year long, but last month\u00a0she pledged\u00a0to spend 30 minutes in nature every day for 30 days, as part of\u00a0The David Suzuki Foundation&#8217;s \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/30x30.davidsuzuki.org\/\">30\u00d730 Nature Challenge<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #444444;\">Now what might a book and magazine Festival Director do with 900 minutes of screen-free outdoors time? <em>The answer may shock and surprise you&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #444444;\">Just kidding. She read books. Of course she did. Heather&#8217;s latest read was\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.chbooks.com\/catalogue\/pastoral\"><em>Pastoral\u00a0<\/em><\/a>by Andr\u00e9 Alexis, published by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.chbooks.com\/home\">Coach House Books<\/a>\u00a0earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #444444;\"><strong>About the book:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #444444;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/torontowots.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/06\/pastoral2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-2250 size-medium aligncenter\" style=\"margin: 10px;\" src=\"https:\/\/torontowots.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/06\/pastoral2.jpg?w=190\" alt=\"\" width=\"190\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/thewordonthestreet.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2014\/06\/pastoral2-159x250.jpg 159w, http:\/\/thewordonthestreet.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2014\/06\/pastoral2-350x550.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 190px) 100vw, 190px\" \/><\/a>For his very first parish, Father Christopher Pennant is sent to the sleepy town of Barrow. With more sheep than people, it is sleepily bucolic \u2013 too much Barrow Brew on Barrow Day is the rowdiest it gets. But things aren\u2019t so idyllic for Liz Denny, whose fianc\u00e9 doesn\u2019t want to choose between Liz and his more worldly lover Jane, or for Father Pennant himself, whose faith is profoundly shaken by the miracles he witnesses \u2013 a mayor walking on water, intelligent gypsy moths and a talking sheep.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #282828;\"><strong>Q&amp;A with Heather<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>What drew you to this book?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was immediately drawn to the idea of a story inspired by Beethoven&#8217;s Sixth Symphony. The idea of following a priest&#8217;s journey into a small town made me think of some of my favourite Victorian literature.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Did you enjoy the book?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I found myself absolutely taken by the small southern Ontario town of Barrow; be it the quirky townsfolk or the local nature, nothing quite plays by the rules here. I liked how the characters are \u00a0informed by the mythology of the past\u2014Eurydice and ancient prayer books\u2014but also confused by the mythology of the modern\u2014holograms and Breakfast at Tiffany&#8217;s. I cant wait to see how the characters&#8217; decisions will affect them down the road.
