When they opened in 1987, founder Sheila Koffman had made it her mission to fill in the gaps in children’s education regarding diversity, social justice, and equity. In the 30 years since, Another Story has grown a loyal client base of teachers, parents, and community members.

Although Sheila Koffman passed last year after owning Another Story for three decades, the staff she left behind are doing their best to fill her shoes. The staff there are knowledgeable of the current Ontario school curriculum, so they can make recommendations to parents and teachers alike. They have a Staff Picks shelf where they display their favourite books that they’ve read and discussed.

While their focus is on children’s and young adult literature, you can still find literature for adults! What you can expect to find are unique and underrepresented books, with diverse topics and characters. All the books that they stock try to teach children valuable lessons on social justice and human rights.

You’ll be able to find everything from more academic nonfiction to adorable children’s picture books. There are titles like Dread Nation by Justina Ireland or Pink Is For Boys by Robb Perlman. You can probably find many of the books in our list of Kids Lit you can talk about on their shelves. And if you’re a teacher, you can take advantage of their educator discount.

Apart from the great selection of books that you can find there, you can join the community they’ve created by attending one of their events. Another Story hosts book launches, readings, and book fairs at schools. The next event that they’ll be hosting that you can look forward to is Vivek Shraya’s book launch for her newest book I’m Afraid of Men at the AGO!

Will we see you there?

Toronto has a rich literary community with tons of places to read, buy, and talk about books!
