Even more than books and magazines, The Word On The Street Toronto’s greatest passion is to connect with the community. Through a number of innovative programs, we are reaching out to encourage people to speak out, speak up, and support literacy. Read below for more details.
For our 2016 festival, we shared the mic with Toronto youth onstage at The Word On The Street! Presented in partnership with the award-winning BAM! Toronto Youth Poetry Slam team, 8 teen poets age 12 to 19 performed original spoken word poems at the festival. Poets recited their poems to an audience of over 50 people, followed by a Q&A.
Spoken word poetry is an art form that almost anybody can do and is accessible to everyone. Just grab a pen and paper and write down your thoughts. Spoken word poetry can be used as an instrument through which you explore and better understand your culture, society, and YOU. We encourage youth to use one of your most powerful tools, your voice, to share stories and create change.
We are not currently seeking submissions to our Youth Spoken Word Poetry Showcase. Please return in April 2017 for more information on how to apply for our 2017 festival.
