Maya is a little girl who lives in India. The electricity in her house has gone out again, and she’s afraid of the dark — even more so since her father died. Maya’s mother distracts her with a legend about the banyan tree, which drank up monsoon waters to become tall and strong. Later that night, Maya revisits the banyan tree and its animals in her imagination and discovers the power of story to overcome fears. Miniature paper theater illustration by Elly MacKay uses spellbinding shadow puppetry to play with darkness and light, making Maya’s world come alive on the page.
